The doppelganger of Wednesday Addams

Dress: LOFT;
Tights: Anne Klein, TJ Maxx;
Shoes: Clarks (read my review/love letter here).
How I've worn the dress: here.

I will be honest: I think this is one of the most boring outfits I've ever posted to the blog. No bells, no whistles, no color, no deviation whatsoever. However, there was a reason for it on Wednesday: I had to finally tell my manager that I needed to transfer my position because of the move. I had no idea what to expect or how they would react, so I needed to feel formidable, like a stone wall, to feel like I could handle whatever came my way. I wanted to look like the perfect employee.

It turns out it went okay -- better than I thought it would go. She was understanding, and we filled out some paperwork and HR updated me some more on what would happen. I have to hear back from the Athens store to see if they have any positions open for me to transfer to. It's a little scary, throwing a line out there without knowing if I'll be pulled in, but it was a huge weight off my shoulders to talk to my manager about it today.

Anyways. You'd be surprised how durable these clothes are and how often I wear them. Actually, if you knew how much I really wear this dress to work, you'd probably be grossed out that I don't dry clean as often as I should. The dress has a great design and holds it shape very well (no wrinkles!), and the pockets are a huge asset, because it allows me to a) secretly text, b) hide little snacks to munch on and c) carry my little notebook of blog outfit ideas. Tights are usually absurd during summer in Georgia, but when it's freezing at work, they help. The shoes are still super comfortable and I no longer have any blisters or aches when I come home, so I highly recommend this particular pair for longtime standing/walking.

Wearing so much black does make me feel blah because I'm such a pattern-color person. I have to pretend that it's cool, and that I'm secretly a grownup Wednesday Addams, saying deadpan lines to Pugsley and coming up with macabre experiments to try with Cousin It. I used to love the "Addams Family" (both the animated and live-action versions) and still know all the verses to the opening credits (thank you, fifth grade musical).

Anyways, I'd like to know: what outfits do you wear to make yourself feel strong and capable at work?

Happy Thursday!

signature1 by you.

  1. Good luck on the transfer and the impending move!

    Sure your outfit today may not be "going out with the girls for some partying" but is work-appropriate and stylish. I love any dress with pockets. And I am totally with you on the melting outdoors and freezing inside deal right now.

  2. Surprisingly, the outfits that make me feel strong and confident usually include dark wash trouser jeans and a button-up. I know that's more of a casual Friday look in most office environments, but where I work, that's actually really put-together.

  8. I like this outfit, but maybe that's just the New Yorker in me. ;)

    The day I told my boss I was moving to New York, I wore a sleeveless black shift dress with a wide gray horizontal stripe at the bottom. It always makes me feel strong and professional, and it was perfect for the humid June Atlanta day.

    Good luck with the move! I'm excited to hear about your future plans! Sometimes I wish I could have had another year in Athens.

  9. high heels are a formidable weapon! Not to be too macabre, but you could always stab someone with one if they got in your way.

    oddly though, I feel easily toppled in them, even though that's paired with feeling like a conqueror.

    Good luck with your move!! I'm sure you'll find a good spot - but you're moving too soon - I'm going to be coming to Atlanta this upcoming year

  11. Glad to hear that things went well with requesting a work transfer. Things like that can be so nerve wracking and I tend to anticipate people's reactions being worse in my head! Seems like you do too! As for the outfit, it may be "boring" in the fashion blogger sense, but in terms of functionality, I'd totally wear this to work!! It looks like such a good staple piece to have in your closet. And, it's really flattering.

  12. I'd say you were more Audrey Hepburn than Wednesday Addams. Just sans alligator shoes and ridiculous cigarette holder. Lovely. And good luck with your move! I miss Athens too much.
